Podcast Episode Specific Cover Art

People are underestimating just how much services like Spotify are going to change podcasting, especially on the podcast discovery side of things. Here's a quick example using episode-specific art.

We always advocate for shows to have episode-specific art for their episodes but some players don’t make use of it so the investment doesn’t always pay off.

However, check out this example from two of our latest client shows in Spotify. One is for Jessica Zweig at SimplyBe. Agency and the other is for TopstepTrader. The first episode has episode art, but the second one doesn't. Spotify decided to use episode-specific art as the background with the general podcast cover art as the thumbnail. Without episode-specific art, your show gets a simpler background.

Which one looks more appealing to you as you’re browsing?

Spotify uses episode specific artwork to create a more attractive background for podcast episodes.

None of this requires anything Spotify specific. You could be supporting these features today in your feed. Think about your show as bigger than just one app or service and try to appeal to people who aren’t just grabbing your RSS feed.

It’s little changes like this that are going to pull more non-podcast listeners into the ecosystem. Spotify has millions of captive, qualified audio listeners in its app. They could all become listeners of your show.
